Join Saadia Alvi, MD and Plant-based Nutrition Specialist Barbara Penaranda for an interactive discussion on pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. You’ll learn ways to help you manage these chronic conditions if you have them or increase your chances of preventing them. Dr. Alvi will also offer guidance on smarter eating habits, dining-out menu food choices and her favorite diabetes-focused resources to help you daily. Barbara will present a plant-based cooking demo and discuss some of her favorite ingredients and recipes for simple and delicious daily meals.
Of the 84+ million U.S. adults who have pre-diabetes, 90% don’t know they have it because it does not have clear symptoms. It is diagnosed by a medical professional through the testing of blood glucose. Over 30 million U.S. adults have diabetes, and 25% don’t know they have it; diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the U.S. (source: cdc.gov)
Health and lifestyle factors that increase your risk of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes include: obesity, high blood pressure, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), physical inactivity, family history of type 2 diabetes, smoking and stress.
